Bulletproof Backpack Sales Surge Following Florida High School Shooting

A Massachusettes-based company that specializes in selling bullet-proof clothing and accessories saw an increase in sales the day after a horrific high school shooting in Florida. According to the New York Post, Bullet Blocker sold 500 of their bulletproof backpacks on Thursday, February 15.

The kevlar-lined backpacks weigh between four and six pounds and cost between $200 to $500. The backpacks are capable of "stopping .357 and .44 Magnum rounds, 9 mm bullets and .45-caliber hollow-point ammo and more." They will not stop rifle rounds, such as the type of ammunition used in the shooting in Florida.

The backpacks are designed to meet the NI Level IIIa standard for protection, which protects against many common pistol rounds. Items made to the NIJ Level III standard offer protection against rifle rounds such as the 5.56mm, but those items weigh significantly more. Bullet Blocker warns on their website that people should not place two pieces of lower rated armor on top of each other because it will not offer increased protection.

The site also sells individual inserts which can be used to add protection to a backpack you already own.
