Tipster Helps Indiana Police Prevent School Shooting

A 14-year-old boy killed himself after exchanging gunfire with police officers at Dennis Intermediate School in Richmond, Indiana. Officers received a tip that the student had planned to commit an act of violence at the school, so it was immediately placed on lockdown.

Officers were waiting for the boy, who was not a current student at the school, and confronted him by the entrance to the building. He shot out the glass door and entered the school and officers chased him inside, where they exchanged gunfire. The teen then shot and killed himself on the second floor of the school.

No officers, staff or students were hurt during the incident. Officials have not said if the suspect was injured during the gun battle with police.

"It is important to emphasize that due to the result of advance notification of the potential for a violent act at the school, the school had initiated (its) lockdown procedure which clearly prevented injury to students and faculty even though the suspect was able to enter the school," Indiana State Police said in a statement.

Authorities have not identified the teenager or the person who made the 911 call. They did not say what type of gun he was carrying or how many he had. They did state that they are working to determine the motive for the attempted school shooting.
