Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms Tests Positive For Coronavirus

Atlanta mayor, Keisha Lance Bottoms, has tested positive for coronavirus.

Bottoms announced the news of her diagnosis on Twitter and during Monday’s (July 6) guest appearance on MSNBC. "COVID-19 has literally hit home. I have had NO symptoms and have tested positive," she tweeted at the time.

Speaking on news show about contracting the disease, the 50-year-old said she and her husband decided to get tested because they’d been sleeping more than usual — the results were shocking, to say the least. "It leaves me for a loss of words because I think it really speaks to how contagious this virus is. We've taken all the precautions that you can possibly take. I have no idea when and where we were exposed,” she explained.

Afterward, in another interview with Chris Cuomo on his CNN show, Cuomo Prime Time, Bottoms reiterated how “stunned” she was by the news of contracting coronavirus. “My husband and I don't have underlying health conditions, so prayerfully, this will be as bad as it gets for us, but this is scary," she said. “We've been very careful. Even my kids have been careful, so I’m stunned."

Before learning that she had coronavirus, Bottoms believed she’d been experiencing her usual allergy symptoms. “My symptoms have been like my seasonal allergy symptoms — I've had a headache the past few days and just a little dry cough, but that's not unusual because I have that with my allergies, which are just about year-round in Atlanta.”

As for the rest of her family, Bottoms said her husband had been sleeping so much he’d started experiencing “Cuomo dreams,” likening his symptoms to that of the CNN anchor’s. Now, with coronavirus reaching her home, the politician has had to transition to “mommy mode” as she plans to get two more of her children tested as well as her mother, whom she saw over the holiday weekend.

As of Tuesday (July 7), Georgia has reached over 97,000 cases of COVID-19 and more than 2,800 deaths in the state due to the virus.
