Polls Open As Americans Vote For The Next President

Across The U.S. Voters Flock To The Polls On Election Day

Voters across the nation are lining up at the polls to cast their ballot for who they want to be the next president. While over 100 million people already cast their votes, long lines are forming as polling places open across the country.

In South Carolina, dozens of voters were waiting in socially distanced lines, with some people showing up more than two hours before the polls opened. In Florida, it was the same story as people were eager to cast their ballots.

Due to the enormous influx of voters who decided to vote by mail because of the coronavirus pandemic, it is unlikely that there will be a clear winner by the end of the night. In Pennsylvania, which is a crucial swing state with 20 electoral votes up for grabs, ballots must be postmarked by election day and will be counted as they arrive in the next few days. If President Donald Trump can win the state, it gives him a path to victory, while exit polls could provide some insight into how he will fare in the other Rust Belt states. If Joe Biden wins the state, it makes it extremely difficult for President Trump to earn the 270 electoral votes needed to win reelection.

If Trump wants to win, he will likely need to run the table in the swing states, which include Wisconsin, Georgia, Michigan, Arizona, North Carolina, Florida, and Ohio.

Polls have narrowed in Ohio and Florida, which have 18 and 29 electoral votes, respectively. No Republican has won the presidency without winning Ohio.

Biden's path to 270 includes notching victories in Michigan and Wisconsin, two states that the Democrats lost in 2016. He will also need to keep Minnesota and Nevada blue.

The balance of the Senate is also at play. There are 35 seats up grabs this year, including special elections in Arizona and Georgia. Democrats need to flip just four seats if they want to take the majority.

In the House of Representatives, all 435 members face reelection. The Democrats took control of the House in 2018 and are likely to remain in the majority. The Republicans would need to flip 21 seats in order to regain the majority.
